Christmas Spirit

Right now is my favorite time of year.
I LOVE when I have an entire month of Christmas before me.

I decked the halls on Saturday,
then spent Saturday night
practicing more photography.

OMG...photography is SO FUN!!!!!
A ton of trial and error to figure out
how to get the best photos.

Thought I'd share them with you to
hopefully spark the
Christmas Spirit!

This is my gorgeous tree.
I love it so much, I want to hug it!

I like our tree LADEN with lights and ornaments
and all the memories and projects the kids created
through the years STILL adorn our tree.

I woke up at 6 this morning with the idea
for this cool effect flowing into my head.
It was still dark outside, so I jumped out of bed
and set up my camera and tripod.
I LOVE playing with photo-editing
to tweak,
but that is MY tree below
in a different light!

Yep, December is gonna be
FUN!!!

More Christmas to come...

What Would YOU do for a TV?

I'm back from Thanksgiving at my
sister-in-law Dorothy's beautiful home.
I love that she decked it out in Christmas.
A great chance to experiment with my new
photo techniques...
practicing NOT using the flash.

Meanwhile, down in the basement, all eyes
were glazed on the TV screen watching football.
(Note: I think piling is in the family gene pool!)

Nobody would look at my camera and the shot
was boring....
Heck with them!
I used the flash.

That is the only picture I took ALL afternoon!

After a lovely dinner, I asked my ten year old niece Crystal
to pose for a photo by the pretty tree.

I guess you can't expect a girl and her dog
to stay still during the slow shutter speed.

I changed the camera settings and tried again.
This time, I swear the shutter stayed open for three dang minutes!
I shook the camera trying to get it to CLICK.

"Kiddies, STOP hanging on each other and one of you
sit in the chair," I pleaded.

Did I ever tell you Lindsay and Mark are Siamese twins?

That's because they aren't...they just always look like they are.

"PLEASE!! Just ONE of you sit in the chair!

By now, I was getting pretty blurry-eyed
and was ditching my idea of a  new career in
Christmas portraiture...

Then I got this pretty picture.

Hey, I'm learning!

But, let's focus on this guy:

After driving an hour and a half home from Dorothy's
through wind and sleet,
Sonny announced he and his pal Cody were going over to Target.
They read in the store flier that Target was selling a
40-inch LCD television for $300.
First come, first serve...
doors would open at 4 am on Black Friday.

Cody was layered in coats, hats, boots, and long undies,
with chemical warmers in his socks and gloves.
my son zipped up his hoodie, saying his winter coat was at school.

Any mother can tell you a sweat shirt ain't gonna hold up in
27-degree howling wind for
seven hours in dead-night darkness.

"I'll be fine, Mom," he said, rolling his eyes.

Less than an hour later, Lindsay and I were
cozied up in blankets watching the
Oprah's Favorite Things episode I recorded on Tivo
when the phone rang.

Yep, it was Sonny BEGGING for coats, hats, blankets
lawn chairs and hot chocolate.

I gathered up the woolies.
"If they drink hot chocolate, they'll have to pee," I told Lindsay.
"And, I don't think they want to pee into that wind!"

Lindsay drove the stuff over to them and
noted they were about 25th in line.
Nobody knew how many televisions were
inside that store.

I drifted in and out of sleep all night, worrying about them
as the wind rattled the windows.
I thought of driving over with an ice pick to chisel them off the sidewalk.

At 2:30 am, I called and Sonny was
in the van warming up.
Now, they were working the line in shifts.

I fell sound asleep after that and
didn't awaken until 6:30.

I crept out to the kitchen and found this:

He will have great appreciation for that television for years to come.
He earned the $300 from his summer job,
but earned the TV through incredible endurance.

*aka teenage insanity!*

It's eleven o'clock and he's fast asleep, all snug in his bed.
When he wakes up,
I'll get the rest of the story.
(I hope he didn't fight anyone to get the TV!!!)

Saying Goodbye to Autumn

2010 has zoomed by and I can't believe
we'll be feasting on Thanksgiving
in just a few weeks.

Usually, the snow begins to fly here in
Michigan this time of year.

Yet, this week, with temps in the 60s
I couldn't resist breathing in a last bit of fall.

I checked out several apple farms and shops,
knowing they are supplying the fruit for
many upcoming holiday pies.

(Click on photos to make them bigger.)

I also hung out by the river where just a hint of
fall color lingers.

It's so pretty by the river,
especially on an Indian Summer day
with just me and my camera.

I was sitting on a bench,
soaking up the sights and sunshine,
when all of a sudden...

 I heard....

GEESE!

Then I saw them!

It reminded me of my
I wrote about in October.

This is what I have learned
from observing geese this fall:
  • Geese hate me.
  • Geese hate all people.
  • Geese poop a lot.
  • Geese stink.

Before I get hate comments from
geese lovers...
let me explain.

Whenever I try to get close to a gaggle of geese to take pictures,
the geese emperor sends out
some kind of sonar noise
alerting the flock to
BOLT....

NOW!

I had to take all these pictures
with my zoom lens from
a distance,
while trying not to slip in the goose poop!

But, geese do make majestic pictures.

As I was looking through the lens
and holding my nose from the stink,
tears sprang to my eyes.

After years of being insanely busy,
it was heavenly having the time
to truly experience the
waning autumn.

I'm in a lovely time of life...

Love from Beyond?

I was washing off grapes this morning
when one flipped out of the colander
into the sink.

I picked it up and smiled at the shape.
"Look, honey," I said as I held it up for my husband.
"It's a LOVE grape!"

It was shaped like a heart.

Actually, my hubby ruined the moment
by saying it looked more like a butt,

BUT,

I didn't have the heart to eat it
because it felt special.

Even MORE special...
I received an e-mail from my cousin Kathy.

Kathy lives in Missouri
and loves to garden.
She bought this Adirondack chair in June
so she could lounge in her garden,
soaking up the glory.

Kathy expects her first frost soon,
so she ran out and took pictures of these pretty petunias
that adorn her yard.

Kathy lives in the home where she grew up.
Every summer, her mother planted a single pot of
lilac-colored petunias on the front porch.

Kathy loved the pale purple blooms,
and adored her precious mother.

When her mom died at Christmas in 1997,
Kathy was devastated.

The black cloud of grief
hovered into the next spring...

until...

the purple flowers sprang up
all over the place.

The front of the house is lined with them, too.

The odd thing is...

She didn't plant them!

Kathy calls them "Volunteer Petunias".
Friends have told her that seeds can blow or
birds can drop them into her yard.

"Then why did it never happen with
my mother's single pot of petunias?"
Kathy questioned.

Kathy has her own theory:

Her mother sent the enchanting gift
from heaven.

They continue to arrive every spring...
with the comfort and tranquility of a mother's love.

I believe her.

Love transcends...

Barns and the Morning Sky

When I rolled out of bed this morning about 7 o'clock,
I immediately ran to the window.
I have been waiting for a colorful morning sky.

We have many old and even centennial farms in my area and
I have been wanting to shoot pictures
of the numerous rustic barns
against the pinks, purples and blues of morning.

I was so excited to see the color,
I grabbed my camera and jumped in the car
complete with bed-hair.

I had the BEST morning zooming around,
trying to capture the simplicity of the old barns
and the spectacle of the morning sky.

(Click on images to make them bigger.)

The truth is...
I never really stopped to embrace the morning sky,
or the multiple quaint barns
that are so important to the farms in our area.

My new and growing love for photography
is opening my eyes like never before.

What used to be ho-hum,
now makes me stop and stare in awe.

I LOVE IT SO MUCH!

I am wondering where life is steering me...

Trick-or-Treat

That scary monster and Little Red Riding Hood
are not mine.
I borrowed them so I could share
our American Halloween with my many
international blogger friends
who don't celebrate this holiday.

As I told you yesterday, we don't
get trick-or-treaters on our small cul-de-sac,
so I called my friend Carol who lives in
a kiddie neighborhood and asked if I could
take pics of her trick-or-treaters.

The custom here is
to dress up as something funny or frightening...

Then traipse from door to door...

Ring the door bell and shout:

For that, they give you
FREE CANDY!!

The kiddies learn very early,
that this is a
GOOD DEAL!

And, they keep doing it
well into their teens.

Here are some of the fun costumes
that adorned this little
slice of Americana:

We even got to meet the Beatles with parents
John and Yoko!

But no costumes compared to these two:

That's the Red Queen from the new Alice in Wonderland
and Little Bo Peep...
aka Delaney and Mallory.

My friend Dianna is their ULTRA creative
mother who sent me these pics.

The details are remarkable.
This is ARTISTRY, people!!!
You can check out more of Di's
creativity on her wonderful blog

The Queen and Bo Peep had a grand time on
their trick-or-treat rounds!

The winners of my Costume Contest:

As the evening wound down,
I got a text from my husband.

"Please bring home chocolate...
even if you have to beg!"

Nobody in America
EVER
forgets
FREE CANDY!
