Another Deer Story

As you know, I have been obsessed with photographing
winter animals.

I posted the link to my
Dear Deer  blog
on Facebook.

I was thrilled when my friend Sharyl
commented on my wall that
60 to 100 deer gather in the evening in a field near her house.

Once I heard about her herd,
I hurried over!

I took the above photo from the street.
Can you see them itty-bitty way in the heck out there?

I parked by the water tower that is also in this field.
The deer scattered into the woods the moment I pulled in.
I crept around the fence and planted my body
between two trees...
and WAITED...
FREEZING...
in the frigid wind.

The field was empty and I was
freezing my rump off between two dang trees.
(Hubby says my dear rear is still very much there!)

WHERE are the deer????

But the cloudy sunset was pretty.

Slowly,
one by one...

Two by two...

They trotted from the woods.

Even though they stared right at me,
they must have figured I was too frozen
to be dangerous.
They slowly moved closer and closer to my
tree...and me...and
MY CAMERA!!!

I still had to use my telephoto lens.

But, WOWEEEEEE!!!

What a treat to be so close to nature.

Only 16 came out to play.

I don't know what spooked them,
but suddenly
they BOLTED!

And fled to the back of the field again.

Last night, Sharyl called me about 6pm to say
30 deer were in the field.

It was already too dark, so I drove over
and simply stared in awe.

I'm thinking of sticking a deer lick close
to my tree to attract them closer.

I MUST try this again so I can
photograph 60 deer!

Do deer attack frozen females?????

Hi Jill, now I know what made you a fantastic tv reporter. When you're after a story or photo, you really go for it. I admire your tenacity even if it has left you with a frozen rump!!
Exceptional photos, I know there are many wildlife/photography magazines out there (online and offline) that are always on the lookout for great pictures. I think you should consider submitting yours. Have a good weekend.

Awwww...THANKS, Ryan! It's either tenacity or insanity, but I AM ultra curious.

I would love to see Scotland's wildlife. But you already write about your wild life! Life in those tartan kilts! hee hee

Ms Jill... your photos are incredible! You know what, I've developed a trauma with deers, because one night sometime last December, we've almost hit one while hub is driving. Now it's like everytime a deer pops up or two across the road, I shriek! I'm scared. LOL But I do want to take pictures of them though...

I love the close up pic of the deer bounding away with tails high in the air. All pics are postcard perfect.
